Where Does the Duggar Family Live
From LoveToKnow Reality-TV
If you're a fan of the TLC reality TV show 18 Kids and Counting, you may have wondered where does the Duggar family live? It's hard to imagine having so many children in one big house!
About the Duggar Family
The Duggars have been in the national spotlight for some time due to the size of the family. Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar have eighteen children ranging in age from 21 to just one year. Michelle has announced that she is once again pregnant, with another baby due in March 2010.
The oldest Duggar child, Josh, is married to Anna, and they are expecting their first baby in October 2009. The baby is a girl, and will be named Mackynzie Renee.
The Duggars have been the subject of several television specials, and eventually they got their own reality show called 18 Kids and Counting. The show documents the Duggars as they conduct their everyday lives, and showcases how a family of their magnitude deals with ordinary chores and events.
Where Does the Duggar Family Live
On 18 Kids and Counting, the Duggar family home is functional, large and well kept. Their home is in a small city called Tontitown, in Washington County, Arkansas. As of 2009, Tontitown has a population of 1,671 people.
Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar are both real estate agents and designed their own home. They saw this as an opportunity to teach their children about all the work that goes into building a house, and worked together as a family to make their plans a reality.
Much of the house was paid for by the Discovery network, which owns TLC. The Duggars are proud of the fact that they live debt-free, and claim that the bulk of their income is derived from investment properties. The house was completed in 2006, and they have lived there ever since.
A television special was made that documented the designing and building of the home, called The Duggar Dream Home, which aired on TLC.
About the Duggar Family Home
The house itself is about 7000 square feet, with lots of space for the children to eat, sleep, and play. Since all of the kids are also home-schooled, there is space designated for learning as well.
With a family this size, multiple appliances are required for day-to-day activities. Some of these include:
- Four washing machines and four dryers
- Two microwave ovens
- Two standard ovens
- Two dishwashers
- Two kitchen sinks
- Two refrigerators
There is also an extra kitchen in the home, which is even larger than the main kitchen.
The house contains nine bathrooms, a complete sound system hooked up to an in-house studio, and an intercom system that allows for communication between family members at opposite ends of the home.
Donations to Make the House Possible
The Duggars owned the property their house was built on, so that expense was not an issue for them. They used lots of recycled materials to keep costs down, and the whole family put in hundreds of working hours to build the structure.
Because of the family's status on television, sponsors were also involved in donating materials for the home, as well as appliances and furniture. Some of these sponsors included The Home Depot, Sears, Coca Cola, and Huggies.
Keeping Up the Duggar Home
As you can imagine, a house of this size with so many people living in it takes quite a lot of upkeep. The house always looks busy on television, but it also appears to be well kept.
The Duggars' secret to keeping up their home is that everyone pitches in, regardless of age. All of the children are assigned daily chores, including laundry, kitchen duties, and cleaning. Michelle keeps the household very organized, which is an absolute necessity when trying to raise such a large brood.
