About What Not to Wear
What Not to Wear is a makeover reality TV show on TLC. The hosts and fashion stylists are Stacy London and Clinton Kelly.
The premise of the program is to take people who dress poorly, with either an all too casual wardrobe or clothing that is unflattering or far from stylish, and give them a complete style makeover. Participants are nominated by friends, family, or co-workers.
Once a participant has been selected, she is secretly followed by the What Not to Wear camera crew as she goes about her daily life. The cameras catch every fashion disaster, and these clips are shown in each episode to allow viewers a glimpse into what exactly the problem is.
London and Kelly then arrive to surprise the participant, and make her an offer: keep her clothes and walk away, or ditch her wardrobe and get a credit card loaded with $5,000 to purchase brand new clothes that will update her look.
Once the participant accepts the offer to toss her current collection of clothing, she is flown to New York for advice from London and Kelly, a shopping spree, and finally a hair and makeup makeover.
How Each Episode Works
As with most popular makeover reality shows, What Not to Wear has a formula that it follows in each episode. Here is the general order of things:
- Stacy London and Clinton Kelly introduce us to the participant and show hidden camera clips, as well as clips from the people who nominated her.
- London and Kelly travel to the location where the participant lives, and surprise her with their offer.
- Video diary segments from the participant begin, and are sprinkled throughout the rest of the show.
- The contestant then models some of her wardrobe in a 360 degree mirror. London and Kelly offer sometimes biting criticism along with their comments, as the wardrobe items are symbolically tossed in a garbage can. These clothes are actually then donated to charity.
- Kelly and London offer up some outfits they've put together themselves, with flattering items. They advise the participant on the styles and colors that will look best, and work with her own personal preferences.
- The participant goes for her first day of shopping for new clothes, accessories, and shoes, attempting to follow London and Kelly's advice. The stylists watch this via hidden camera.
- The second day of shopping begins, and is usually interrupted when Kelly and London decide they need to intervene.
- The participant gets makeup and hair makeovers, and then models her new clothes for London and Kelly. The stylists add their comments on the new outfits.
- The participant returns home, and her new look is unveiled to family and friends. Loved ones and co-workers are interviewed and comment on the improvements.
- Sometimes, the show returns to see how the participants are doing, and whether or not they have kept up their new looks.
