What Not to Wear Application
From LoveToKnow Reality-TV
The What Not to Wear application is a simple process by which you can nominate someone you know for the program. All the information you need can be found online and you can apply by e-mail. If a friend, family member, or co-worker is in need of a style makeover, consider nominating him or her for the show!
About What Not to Wear
What Not to Wear is a fashion-based reality TV show on TLC. Hosted by stylists Stacy London and Clinton Kelly, the show takes folks who dress poorly and gives them the option to toss their current wardrobe for a $5,000 prepaid credit card with which they can buy new clothes.
Participants are nominated by friends or family and filmed secretly for several days before Stacy and Clinton surprise them with their offer. The stylists then critique the current wardrobe, make suggestions for flattering clothing, and send participants off for two days' worth of shopping. These shopping trips are often intercepted by Stacy and Clinton, when the person doing the shopping tends to veer off track.
The What Not to Wear Application
You can find the What Not to Wear application at the TLC website. Rather than being a form that you can fill in and submit, applications are actually sent by e-mail. Since there are several things that must be included with your application, make sure you read all of the information carefully and double-check that you have everything covered before hitting "send."
Required Information
In your e-mail application, the following information must be included. Remember, you're nominating someone else to be on the show, so keep this in mind when putting your info together.
- Put your city and name of the nominee in the subject line of your e-mail (for example, "Chicago – Jane Doe").
- Include the name, age, size, height, occupation, marital status, number of children, and location of the nominee.
- Describe the nominee's personality and style, including why you feel she (or he) needs this style makeover.
- Include any interesting stories, hobbies, or other traits about the nominee.
- Include two different, recent photos of the nominee, that illustrate her fashion faux pas.
- Finally, include your own contact details, including your name, address, telephone numbers, and e-mail address.
Tips for Creating a Killer Application
There's no point in sending off an application for What Not to Wear if you don't really care if you get the casting staff's attention. Here are some things to keep in mind in order to get your e-mail noticed.
- The photos are an important part of the application, and your e-mail will be deleted if they aren't included. Make sure the photos are in focus and that the nominee can be clearly seen and identified.
- Check, and then check again, to make sure that you have added the photos as attachments to your e-mail.
- When writing the details of the nominee's character, try to focus on the interesting personality aspects. Concentrate on fun things like, "she's deathly afraid of worms," or "she likes to write limericks."
- Try to capture the essence of the nominee without rambling on too long. Details are fine, but casting staff doesn't have time to read a 6,000 word essay on why your friend needs a makeover.
- Focus on positive, fun, and even embarrassing things about your friend without giving anything away that would truly make her uncomfortable. Remember that anything you put in the application could be used on the show.
The Waiting Game
Once you've sent in an application, it becomes a waiting game to see if you'll hear back from the production crew. Try to refrain from sending in further e-mails to check on the status of your application. It can take months for them to decide that they'll be traveling to your city, and even longer to narrow down the pool of potential contestants.
If you're planning on sending in a nomination, or if you already have sent an application, good luck!
