Supernanny
From LoveToKnow Reality-TV
Supernanny is a reality show that showcases families struggling to effectively discipline their children. The show airs on ABC within the United States and on Channel 4 within the United Kingdom.
This Nanny is Indeed Super
Supernanny features Jo Frost, a British nanny who spent over fifteen years dealing with other people's children. Although she has no children of her own, her many years of experience dealing with a variety of families and children taught her what methods work most effectively and which meet with the least amount of resistance.
Jo was discovered for the show during an audition in the UK. In addition to starring on the show, she has since gone on to author a best-selling book entitled Supernanny: How to Get the Best from Your Children and is also busy at work assisting families who can reach her via her official website for advice and parenting tips. She is quickly becoming a widely recognized authority on disciplining children and a celebrity in her own right.
The Show
The show has a relatively simple premise. Families with children sign up to participate in the show because they are having trouble controlling the children and making their homes run smoothly. Jo – also known as the Supernanny – reviews recordings of the homes and then makes a preliminary visit to get a feel for the status of the family.
The First Visit
The first time Jo visits she does not usually engage in any form of teaching or helping, but instead simply watches how the parents interact with the children. This visit usually allows viewers to witness Jo making horrified faces toward the camera while the children of the house run rampant. At this point the parents are usually ineffective, overwhelmed, and quite frazzled.
Jo merely watches the normal interactions of the family and introduces herself to the children as "Jo-Jo." She talks with the kids but usually does not make a move to discipline them or stop them from their activities during this first visit.
The Review
After her first visit, Jo sits down with the parents to show them video footage of the visit and talks to them about what needs to change. She is very diplomatic, usually starting the conversation with a generous compliment about the kids but then moving on to the parents' inadequacies.
Implementing a Plan
Jo explains to the family members what changes will be made. Family members are usually apprehensive about the changes – especially the children – and the protests become more and more aggressive as the children realize Jo isn't going to accept any nonsense.
Solo Parenting
After Jo demonstrates all the new techniques, the parents are left without her guidance but with camera crews still present. This is generally the part of the show when the parent either falls back into old habits or sticks with the new program. Jo returns after this brief period and reviews the time with the parents and they all discuss what needs to be done in the future to make things run more smoothly.
The Departure
Jo leaves the family with lots of hugs and encouraging words. Parents and children are usually quite grateful for her assistance and guidance and sometimes family members burst into tears upon Jo's departure.
The Review
The conclusion of every episode involves the family being revisited by camera crews in order to find out how Jo impacted them. In the vast majority of cases, the family is running more smoothly and everyone remains indebted to Jo for her help.
