Sober House VH1: Background Information

The notion of “sober living” is nothing new to viewers of the two seasons of Celebrity Rehab. A major theme of both shows was what the patients would do after their first stage of rehab to continue with their recovery. Sober living is the option Dr. Drew and the rest of the rehab facility staff hoped all of the patients would choose.

Sober living involves residing at a halfway house of sorts with other recovering addicts. There are strict house rules: residents must perform chores, meet a curfew, and of course, no drugs or alcohol are permitted. Sober living houses are run by a fellow recovering addict who has been clean for a longer period of time than the other residents. Apart from adhering to the house rules, residents are allowed to come and go as they please. Living in a sober house lets residents make a transition back to a “normal” life at their own pace while still being in a semi controlled environment and working on their sobriety.

On Celebrity Rehab, most of the patients hesitated to move into a sober living facility because they were eager to get back to their friends and families. Many of the people who did not ended up relapsing.

Sober House VH1 is the first time viewers are getting a glimpse at what life is like within a sober living facility.

VH1 Sober House Cast

The cast of the first season of VH1 Sober House is as follows:

  • Jennifer Gimenez – house manager
  • Rodney King – Celebrity Rehab season two
  • Mary Cary – season one
  • Nikki McKibben – season two
  • Seth “Shifty” Binzer – seasons one and two
  • Steven Adler – season two
  • Andy Dick – did not appear on Celebrity Rehab
  • Amber Smith – season two

Bob Forrest, who viewers know as a counselor on Celebrity Rehab, makes occasional appearances on this show, and Dr. Drew Pinksy continues to monitor the patients’ progress.

Major Storylines

There are a few major storylines on the Sober House series. Of course, relapsing is a major issue, and the contestants have issues in their personal lives as well. Some recurring themes and major events are:

  • Steven Adler arrives to Sober House high on heroin and proceeds to use the drug while in the house. He becomes abusive with Jennifer, the house leader, and she eventually is forced to call the police to take him out of the house. He is briefly incarcerated and then hospitalized for a brief detox. He is eventually allowed to return to the house after he views videos of his behavior and promises to not put anyone through that again.
  • Amber Smith hopes to have her first sober relationship with a man. An ex calls her and invites her to a wild party, and she relapses and drinks at the party. She is allowed to return the house.
  • Mary Cary’s manager/boyfriend is a concern for the rest of the house. After she left the Celebrity Rehab center, she had vowed to leave her porn identity behind, but her boyfriend has her involved in the porn world again. He is also abusive to her and tempts her with drugs and alcohol.
  • Andy Dick did not appear on either season of Celebrity Rehab but was allowed to enter Sober House by request of Dr. Drew. This is his tenth attempt to get clean and he was propelled to enter the house because he was facing a choice between going to rehab and going to jail.
  • Seth “Shifty” Bizner frequently relapsed on both seasons one and two of Celebrity Rehab and he relapsed during Sober House as well. He left the house and then let the housemates watch him use drugs via a webcam. He was eventually hospitalized with an overdose.

The final episode of Sober House is expected to air in March 2009.

Andy Dick has mentioned that he has been through rehab several times and this is going to be it for him. Thanks for the comment!

I noticed a very important change in how Mr. Dick is relating to his attempt at remaining sober. He has finely stopped using the "failure word" trying to quit. Trying is a negative word and when a person uses this word relating to stopping drug or alcolol use they are setting themselves up for failure. Mr. Dick now is saying,"That's it I am quitting drinking, I am so tired of TRYING. Good luck to all of the residents of sober house. tita
