Rock of Love 2

Rock of Love 2 was the second installment in the successful VH1 series centered on Poison front man Bret Michael’s search for love. Although this foray into the dating world ended in tears, much like season one, Michaels and the Rock of Love girls certainly kept the viewers glued to the screen to the bitter end.

Rock of Love was modeled on VH1’s mega hit show Flavor of Love, and the format of the show is essentially the same. Taking on Flav’s role this time is Bret Michaels, who hosts a bevy of girls in a mansion who all then compete for a chance of being the lady to walk out on his arm. Every episode there is a challenge, and the winner/winners of the challenge get to spend some “alone time” with Michaels. At the end of each episode, there is an elimination ceremony where the girls Michaels wants to keep around are awarded a “backstage pass” (his version of Flav’s clock). One lady is sent home each week until Michaels narrows his selection down to his “rock of love.”

During the first season of Rock of Love, Michaels ended up with a choice between Vegas dancer Heather (who got his name tattooed on the back of her neck during the series) and Chicago based bartender Jes. In a move that shocked many, he sent Heather packing and settled on Jes as his rock of love. At the reunion show, Jes broke up with Michaels on stage, complaining he didn’t keep in touch with her during the show’s hiatus and suggesting that he should have picked Heather.

Rock of love-less, Michael’s returned to VH1 to do it all over again for Rock of Love 2.

The formula for the show remained the same for Rock of Love 2, save for a few minor tweaks:

• A group of girls were chosen on the first night in the house to receive VIP access. They had their own special VIP bedroom, and they each received a VIP pass that they could use to demand Michaels’ attention at any moment, including stealing him away from alone time with other girls. The pass could only be used once.

• All of the girls made it into the house, unlike the first season when Michael’s right hand man Big Jon surveyed the girls and bounced some of them on looks alone before entering the mansion.

Rock of Love 2 spawned a number of breakout starts who have become VH1 reality TV staples, including:

• Daisy – Daisy came oh-so-close to being Michaels’ “rock of love” and she definitely fought for the title. She was known for being an emotional basket case, for being hated by all of the other girls, and for coming on the show while still living with her boyfriend. She claimed to be the niece of boxer Oscar De La Hoya, but he has denied it. At the time of writing, casting is under way for Daisy’s own VH1 show, the cleverly titled Daisy of Love.

• Megan – Megan was no stranger to reality TV when she entered the Rock of Love house, having already won a season of Beauty and The Geek. She was known for her cutting comments and backstabbing ways. Megan appeared on VH1’s I Love Money and nearly made it to the finals, quitting right before the final elimination.

• Angelique (aka Frenchie) – Angelique didn’t last very long in the house, but her constant nudity and over the top sexual antics coupled with her intense accent made her a fan favorite.

At the end of Rock of Love season 2, Michaels was left with a choice between Daisy - the young, troubled girl who was completely devoted to him - and Amber - a woman more his age with a more stable life - and he chose Amber. They survived past the reunion show but eventually split, citing the demands of their respective careers. At the time of writing, Michaels is filming a new version of Rock of Love in which the girls travel around the country with him on a tour bus.

In addition to the Daisy of Love spin off, VH1 also created Rock of Love Girls Charm School, modeled after the Flavor of Love Girls Charm School, with Sharon Osbourne trying to teach the girls a new way to behave.
