Reality TV Oops Examples

Reality TV oops fall into many different categories and occur at every imaginable level. From contestant gaffes to production mistakes, almost every show has been affected at one time or another. Of course some reality shows are more prone to oops moments than others.

Reality TV Oops from Contestants

The most visible group of people associated with any reality show are the contestants, and there's no shortage of reality TV oops from them. From those who quit the show to those who get in trouble with the law, here are some memorable contestants who goofed, big time.

Jason Mesnick, The Bachelor

The Bachelor has enough troubles as it is with its horrible track record of couples staying together. The show took a different turn at the end of season 13 when Bachelor Jason Mesnick proposed to Melissa Rycroft, who accepted. Then, during the After the Final Rose special, Mesnick broke up with Rycroft and asked runner-up Molly Melaney if she would give him another chance. She also accepted.

Adam Jasinski, Big Brother

Adam Jasinski, winner of Big Brother 9, caused a stir on the show by using derogatory terms for disabled children. His real oops moment came after the show wrapped up, however. In 2009, he was arrested and charged for using his Big Brother winnings to purchase illegal drugs, which he then went on to sell.

Richard Hatch, Survivor

There have been numerous Survivor oops moments, but none have been as visible as those involving the first season's winner, Richard Hatch. It's well known that Hatch allegedly failed to pay taxes on his winnings, and after a lengthy trial he was sent to prison.

Maya Luz, Project Runway

Maya Luz was a fan favorite, and favored to win Project Runway season 7. She had never even been in the bottom three throughout the competition, despite never actually winning a challenge. She made it to the final six, and then suddenly decided that she wasn't ready for all of it. She quit the show and walked away, with only two episodes left before the winner was crowned.

Reality Oops from Production and Casting

Contestants aren't the only ones who make big blunders. The people behind the scenes are just as vulnerable, and when they mess up it often makes for even bigger scandals.

American Idol

There have been several slip-ups from the American Idol camp, but one of the more puzzling came in season two of the popular talent-based show. Contestant Frenchie Davis, who made it to the semi-finals, was disqualified when it was revealed that she has posed topless for photos years before. The real puzzler was that Davis had alerted Idol staffers to the situation well before the semis, and no action was taken at that time.

The Biggest Loser

The Biggest Loser has come under fire for giving overweight people unrealistic expectations since most folks don't have time to devote entire weeks to self-improvement. One of the show's most embarrassing moments occurred when contestant Dane Patterson, who lost 100 pounds on the show, was shown finishing a 26-mile marathon. In reality, Dane rode in a car for the last three miles, so producers could get footage of him crossing the finish line.

Next Food Network Star

While the Next Food Network Star isn't one of the big fish in the reality TV cooking competition pool, fans of the show were in for a surprise when they visited the official website near the end of season four. Exit interviews for the two runner-up contestants were posted, as well a clip of final thoughts from the winner - but the finale hadn't yet aired. The clips were quickly pulled, but not before the results of the competition were widely reported and completely spoiled for fans.

Many More Reality Oops in Store

This is just a small sampling of the many reality oops that have both plagued the shows and caused endless entertainment for viewers. By the very nature of reality television, there are sure to be many more blunders in store.
