Real World Road Rules Challenge

MTV's Real World Road Rules Challenge is a reality show that takes cast members from past seasons of both The Real World and Road Rules and has them compete for a cash prize. Occasionally the show also includes new cast members who have never appeared on either of the previous shows, and for this reason these new folks are referred to as "Rookies" and "Fresh Meat."

The Real World brings seven strangers into a house and has them live together. The cameras roll as the strangers try to figure out how to deal with each other on a constant basis.

Road Rules brings a cast of people together to tackle various challenges while also dealing with the romantic inclinations and strong personalities of everyone on the show.

Memorable cast members from these shows are recruited to compete in the spin-off Real World Road Rules Challenge. Some cast members already have preexisting grudges with each other and plenty of cast members have previous romantic interludes with each other that either make for more romance or instead bring up hard feelings that evolve into hatred.

The format of the show changes each season, but some aspects remain relatively constant. There is always a host, although the position of host has been held by several different people. There are always contestants from previous The Real World and Road Rules seasons, but sometimes there are new people brought in to seasons to mix things up. Some cast members who only have experience with Real World Road Rules Challenge have found stardom and are no longer considered "Fresh Meat" even though they never once appeared on episodes of The Real World or Road Rules.

Every episode there is one or two challenges, one of which eliminates someone from the show. As the cast dwindles in number, everyone else plots and schemes to get someone else eliminated. Alliances are formed, enemies are made, and alcohol flows like water.

In the end, a team of contestants win the grand prize, which usually falls into the six figure range. Since the prize is divided among the winning contestants, the amount is not as large for individuals, but it still translates into a nice cash prize for the winners.

Although there are some players who appear season after season of this show, there are some players who only appear once and then decide the cutthroat nature of the game isn't for them. The veteran players who thrive in these situations can appear quite intimidating, making more passive contestants quit or simply not return for another season.

There have been over fifteen seasons of this show, beginning in 1999. The producers have used various tactics to keep the show fresh over the years, including pitting genders against each other and sending the contestants to exotic locations such as:

The seasons are sometimes so close together that two seasons will overlap during the same year. Some contestants have made a career of appearing on this show and competing for cash and other prizes. In fact, some contestants have appeared on six or seven seasons of this show, making them the definitive veterans of the group.
