Octomom Reality Show

From LoveToKnow Reality-TV

Is an Octomom reality show in the works? While there have been several reports that Octomom Nadya Suleman has signed a deal for a reality TV show, the details are still unfolding.

About Octomom

Nadya Suleman, who is perhaps best known by the moniker Octomom, is a young mother with a large stable of children at home. With six children under the age of ten already at home, Suleman gave birth to octuplets in January, 2009.

News of the birth spread quickly. At first, people regarded the story as a happy one. As details became clearer, however, people became stunned and eventually angry at the situation. Some reasons for the public outcry were:

  • All of Suleman's 14 children were conceived through in vitro fertilization.
  • Suleman was unmarried, unemployed, and lived with her mother.
  • It seemed there were no plans in place for the care, both physically and financially, of the eight new babies.

Octomom Reality Show Rumors

Soon after the octuplets were born, rumors began to circulate that Octomom would be seeking a reality TV show along the same lines as the Gosselins of Jon and Kate Plus 8. Suleman repeatedly denied wanting a reality show, saying that she simply wasn't interested.

Several offers came through for Suleman and her kids, including a dating show, but these were turned down. She was also offered a million dollar payout to appear in a pornographic movie, which she also declined.

The Real Deal

Finally, in the summer of 2009, news broke that an Octomom reality show would indeed go forward. Suleman signed a deal with Eyeworks, the same production company that handles The Biggest Loser and Breaking Bonaduce.

Filming for the reality show was scheduled to begin in September 2009, but no details have been announced regarding the format or whether the show will even be picked up by broadcasters in the U.S. Networks in the U.K. have already expressed interest in airing the show.

According to Suleman, the show will be more of a documentary to record the lives of her children as they grow up. She has also said that the cameras will be on hand several times a year, until the babies are eighteen years old. The initial contract for the reality show is for three seasons.

How Much Will They Make?

Octomom's kids will earn about $250 per day, collectively, for their appearances on this television show. Their money will go into a trust fund, to be made available to them when they are eighteen.

Octomom's Kids

Nadya Suleman's first six children are:

  • Elijah Makai, 7
  • Amerah Yasmeen, 6
  • Joshua Jacob, 5
  • Aiden, 3
  • Calyssa Arielle, 2
  • Caleb Kai, 2

Calyssa and Caleb are fraternal twins.

The octuplets are named:

  • Noah Angel
  • Maliyah Angel
  • Isaiah Angel
  • Nariyah Angel
  • Makai Angel
  • Josiah Angel
  • Jeremiah Angel
  • Jonah Angel

All together, Suleman has ten boys and four girls.

Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage

In September 2009, the Fox network aired a two-hour special called Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage. The show was a somewhat sensational look at the family, complete with footage from the frenzied hospital delivery room where the octuplets were born.

Among the most shocking footage was a clip of young Caleb kicking one of the babies, and then repeatedly hitting his mother and swearing at her.

The show, which was heavily advertised and promoted, brought in just over four million viewers. It was hardly the ratings juggernaut that the network had hoped for, and could perhaps be an indication of just how well an Octomom reality show will fare.

Would You Watch an Octomom Reality TV Show?

The real question now is whether or not viewers will be interested in seeing more of Octomom and her family. The planned reality show may end up being a tough sell to American networks since the public seems to be tiring of Suleman and her kids. In the meantime, she has plans for a book, a line of baby care products, and she has even applied to trademark the Octomom name.
