The Miami Ink Studio

The Miami Ink tattoo parlor is located on Washington Avenue on Miami Beach. The original shop featured on the show - called Love Hate Tattoo Studio - is now a retail store. A new studio opened just down the street.

All of the tattoo artists featured on Miami Ink work in the studio, so you can visit them to get your own tattoos. Clients featured on the show have filled out an application to be on film. Most of the time - depending on filming schedules and media appearances - the shop serves walk-in clients only.

Show Format

In each episode of the show, customers enter the studio looking for custom designed tattoos. They relate a bit of their personal story and explain what the tattoo will represent. After this, the artists begin working on the designs. Customers return to see the sketches and then have their tattoos inked. As the tattoo is being placed, clients and the tattoo artists talk more about the tattoos themselves and the stories behind them.

Between the tattoo segments, we get to learn more about the artists themselves and the evolution of the studio. As the two main artists - Ami James and Chris Nunez - watch the studio grow and prosper they consider expansion, other projects, and ways to bring in even more customers. With these side projects and promotional events going on, as well as the day-to-day dealings of the business, there is often tension between the owners of the studio as well as the artists.

The Founders of Miami Ink

Love Hate Tattoo Studio was founded by Ami James and Chris Nunez. The show Miami Ink began in 2005, and followed the pair as they headed to Florida to open the tattoo shop. Each consecutive season includes many scenes of their business relationship with each other.

Ami James

Ami James was born in Israel in 1972. After serving in the Israeli Special Forces, James moved to the United States and started his career as a tattoo artist in 1992. He is currently single.

Chris Nunez

Chris Nunez was born in 1973 and raised in Miami, Florida. He began his career as a graffiti artist before switching to tattoos. He lived in Brazil for five years and traveled through Europe for two years, studying the art of tattooing throughout his travels.

The Rest of the Tattoo Artists

Throughout the seasons of Miami Ink, several other tattoo artists have come and gone. Original artists include:

  • Darren Brass
  • Yojiro "Yoji" Harada
  • Chris Garver

Other tattoo artists who have been featured on the show include:

  • James Hamilton
  • Morgwn Pennypacker
  • Tim Hendricks
  • Mikey Slater

Spinoffs

With the success of Miami Ink, several spinoff reality TV shows have been created. The most popular of these is L.A. Ink, which features Kat Von D, a tattoo artist who was seen on two seasons of the original show. Kat is controversial, outspoken, and larger than life, and her tattoo studio in California features several other female tattoo artists.

Two other spinoffs have been created. London Ink is based in England, while TLC Brazil has created Rio Ink in Rio de Janeiro.

Side Businesses

Ami James and Chris Nunez started a couple of side business after tasting success with the tattoo studio. Banking on their fame from the television show, the pair have opened a night club called Love Hate Lounge. The club is located on the same street at the tattoo studio, and features hip-hop and rock music every night from 9pm to 5am.

The original location of the tattoo studio is now a retail shop, which sells tattoo-inspired clothing made by DeVille USA.
