Makeover Reality Shows
From LoveToKnow Reality-TV
Makeover reality shows offer ordinary people a chance to change part of their lives, from their appearances to their homes. Oftentimes the participants have touching personal stories that facilitate the need for a makeover, while sometimes those involved are nominated by friends or family. Either way, the transformations are usually fun to watch!
Beauty and Fashion Makeover Reality Shows
Some of the most popular makeover reality shows are those that take a before and after look at individuals who have gone through a beauty or fashion makeover. While a few of them are no longer airing new episodes, they can be found on DVD collections or as reruns from time to time. Here are some good ones.
What Not to Wear
What Not to Wear airs on TLC. Hosts Stacy London and Clinton Kelly work together as they transform the wardrobes of unsuspecting participants. The people who end up on the show are nominated by their loved ones or coworkers and go through a process of learning about what clothing will work with their lifestyles and body types.
Participants are then set free to shop with a credit card donated to them by the show. Stacy and Clinton sometimes need to rescue the shoppers as they struggle to find the right items of clothing.
How to Look Good Naked
How to Look Good Naked is based on a British reality show of the same name. The American version is hosted by Carson Kressley, formerly of the makeover show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. The show airs on the Lifetime network.
Participants in the show are taken through a variety of different self esteem building workshops and techniques, in order for them to learn to love their bodies. At the end of the show their nude portraits are tastefully done in a photo studio, and posted as a billboard for all the world to see.
How Do I Look
How Do I Look is hosted by soap star Finola Hughes. It airs on The Style Network and helps people with their fashion disasters. It is similar to What Not to Wear.
10 Years Younger
Just as the name suggests, 10 Years Younger aims to help people who look older than their actual age. This makeover show ran from 2004 to 2005 on The Learning Channel, and has since returned with new episodes.
Other Beauty Makeover Shows
There have been many other beauty-based makeover shows that have been fan favorites over the years. These include:
- The Swan
- Extreme Makeover
- Queer Eye for the Straight Guy
- Ambush Makeover
- A Makeover Story
Health and Fitness Makeover Shows
Another type of makeover show takes people who are overweight and aims to teach them how to eat better, get active, and ultimately shed pounds. These shows have become increasingly popular, spurring the sale of related products such as diet books and workout DVDs. Some of these shows include:
The Biggest Loser
The Biggest Loser is by far the most popular weight loss reality TV show. Contestants are ready to work hard to lose weight and learn how to keep it off, but many are surprised at just how difficult the process is. They are all tested along the way with temptations, but most of the contestants fare extremely well in the long run. Trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels have become household names as a direct result of their participation in the series.
Celebrity Fit Club
Celebrity Fit Club uses the same premise as The Biggest Loser but the participants are all B-list celebrities. The show is full of drama as the stars complain about exercising and trying to stick to their recommended diets. Celebrity Fit Club is hosted by comedian ANT, who appeared on two seasons of the NBC reality show Last Comic Standing.
Home Makeover Shows
There are quite a few home design makeover shows, but two of them have become so popular that they are instantly recognizable. They are:
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
Ty Pennington hosts Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. In each episode, one family has their old home torn apart and a new one built in just one week. The show is popular for its tugging of the heart-strings, as all of the families featured have a sad or inspiring story to tell that directly relates to their need for a new home.
Trading Spaces
Trading Spaces is credited for starting the home makeover reality show craze. On the show, neighbors trade houses and completely change one room with the help of a designer. The designers themselves each have their own styles and quirks and it can be lots of fun to see what the finished rooms look like, as well as the home owners' reactions.
