Common Topics

Cameras follow the person highlighted as well as anyone else directly involved in the story. Most episodes contain two or three people with the same issues. Whether True Life is more real than some reality shows has been in debate for many years, but MTV has garnered a number of awards for the show. True Life is currently heading into it's 10th season.

While MTV True Life covers a variety of topics, some of the more common ones involve addiction, strife, or hobbies. Below are some specific topics that True Life has covered:

Most of the issues MTV True Life covers involves serious topics. There are some episodes that took a lighter note like the "I Have Embarrassing Parents" or "I'm Horny in Miami" episodes.

Criticism

One of the biggest criticisms of MTV True Life is how true the issues really are. The actual topics are true and the people with those issues or situations are real. Despite that, Eisen, a True Life producer, says "Audiences are skeptical about reality television. I think they appreciate the realness of 'True Life'." (L.A. Nominations and Awards

True Life is regarded as one of the better "reality shows" because the topics are real and the people have real problems or situations. Because of that, the show has garnered nominations and won awards for some of its episodes.

GLAAD Media Awards

  • For the episode "I'm Gay and Getting Married", MTV won for Outstanding Documentary in 2005.
  • In 2003, the episode "I'm Coming Out" was nominated for Outstanding Documentary.
  • In 2000, the episode "Matthew's Murder" was nominated for Outstanding TV Journalism.

Image Awards

For the episode "I am Driving While Black", MTV won the Image Award for Outstanding News, Talk or Information Special.

News & Documentary Emmy Awards

The Episode "Matthew's Murder" was nominated for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story – Program in 1999.

Prism Awards

In 2007, MTV won the Prism Award for Best TV Teen Series Episode or Special for the episode "I'm on Crystal Meth".
