About MTV The Duel 2

The Duel 2 is the sequel to MTV’s highly successful reality competition, The Duel. The new season premiered on April 8, 2009, and follows veterans from MTV’s The Real World, Road Rules and the Fresh Meat challenge as they duke it out in Auckland, New Zealand. The Duel 2 marks the seventeenth season of MTV’s ratings giant Real World/Road Rules Challenge. Insiders speculate that this could be the final installment of the popular reality competition, as MTV has not contracted additional seasons with the production company in charge of the physically intense Survivor-type show.

Do the Duel

The show gets its name from the dueling circle where two players are forced to battle it out in order to remain in the game. Prior to the elimination duel, teams compete in challenges to determine which competitors will face off in the duel. Depending on the challenge, competitors are split up according to gender, or they are randomly divided into groups of both men and women. Regardless of the grouping, each challenge yields one male and one female winner.

Once the group challenge is complete, contestants begin a voting process to determine which two team members (one male and one female) will face off in the dueling circle. The male and female contestants voted into the dueling circle then select a competitor of their respective gender to compete against. After the competitors are chosen, MTV The Duel 2 host, TJ Lavin, holds up five cards for the dueling competitors to randomly choose from. The selected cards dictate which duel the players will compete in. The losers of the duel are eliminated from the game and sent home.

New Twists

Unlike the first season on The Duel, the winners of the group challenge are allowed to choose one person to save from that night's duel. The "immune" contestant then begins the voting process, which determines who will face off in the dueling circle. Another new twist in this season’s game is that there is now a period of deliberation between the end of the challenge and the selection of the contestants for the elimination game.

However, by far, the biggest twist in The Duel 2 is the fact that there are no teams. Each contestant is in charge of his or her own destiny. After nine challenges, the final six players—three males and three females--will compete for first, second, and third place cash prizes. The first place winner receives $150,000, second place wins $35,000 and third place gets $15,000.

The Challenges

To remain in the game, competitors must compete in physically grueling challenges. Some of the most popular include:

  • Spot On: Two rock-climbing walls are set up for each challenger with a distinct pattern designed on each wall. However, the pattern is not complete. Each challenger must use the pieces given to him/her to finish the pattern. The first challenger to complete the design wins.
  • The Elevator: The dueling contestants are placed in two separate cages equipped with a pully chain inside. Each competitor must pull the chain inside of his/her cage in order to elevate the cage. The first person to the top is the winner.
  • Back Off: Dueling competitors have a hook attached to his/her back. The challenger must take the hook off of the opponent's back and place it on a ring hanging on the edge of the dueling circle. The first challenger to successfully connect an opponent's hook to the ring twice wins the challenge.
