MTV The City

From LoveToKnow Reality-TV

MTV The City follows former Hills girl Whitney Port through the maze of New York's fashion world.

Whitney Port

Before The City

After appearing on the MTV hit series The Hills alongside Lauren Conrad and Audrina Patridge for a few seasons, Whitney Port decided it was time to move on. The first few seasons featured Port as an intern at Teen Vogue alongside Lauren. She was later promoted out of intern status, but still wasn't quite happy with her job. Eventually, Port landed a job at the fashion PR firm The Peoples Revolution in 2007.

Port's stint at The Peoples Revolution lasted about a year and in 2008, she landed a job at Diane von Furstenberg in New York. Not only did Whitney Port get a new job in a new city, but she was also offered her own reality television series by MTV called The City.

Moving to The City

Upon accepting her position as PR Director at DVF, Whitney packs up her things and leaves her hometown of sunny Los Angeles for New York City and the series MTV The City was born. Here's a list of the main people featured on the show aside from Whitney:

  • Erin Lucas – One of Whitney's oldest friends and daughter to AC/DC bassist Cliff Williams. Whitney often looks to Erin for advice on the people of New York and, of course, boys.
  • Samantha Swetra – Port meets Swtra, an assistant buyer at Bergdorf Goodman, through her job at DVF. The two become close friends and seem to have much more in common, at least personality wise, then Port and Olivia Palermo.
  • Olivia Palermo – Whitney's coworker at DVF and stereotypical New York socialite. She's drop-dead gorgeous but she is also self-serving, narcissistic and a little nasty. Contrary to popular belief, people don't dislike her because she's pretty; they dislike her because she's mean. One of those people is Whit's love interest, Jay Lyon.
  • Jay Lyon – Australian musician Jay caught Whitney's eye in the beginning of the season. Although these two seem comfortable with one another, with him going so far as to ask Whitney to be his girlfriend, as the season goes on the relationship has its growing pains. Jay often turns to his roommate Adam for advice, but soon discovers that Adam may not be the best person to turn to when it come to relationships.
  • Adam Senn – Jay's roommate who is featured often on the show along with his girlfriend Allie. The two find themselves at the center of attention as rumors of Adam cheating on Allie begin to circulate.
  • Allie Crandall – World traveling model and Adam's girlfriend. In one episode, owner of The People's Revolution brings Allie to tears by making a few comments about how she looked unhealthy because she was so thin.
  • Kelly Cutrone – Owner of The People's Revolution and someone who Whitney respects and admires. Cutrone may seem a little bit brash, but you just have to love her for speaking exactly what's on her mind, all the time.

First Season Success

Though MTV The City was met with lower ratings for its premiere episode than The Hills, it still did quite well. Well enough that MTV and Whitney Port have agreed to do a second season.

The City has been met with a good reception from the public largely in part because Whitney is so likable and people were getting a little tired of Lauren Conrad. Though The Hills still does very well in the ratings department and The City definitely has it's share of drama, Whitney's drama is a little bit more grown up than the high school he-said/she-said drama of Lauren. Of course, some of the drama on The City is a bit high school, after all, isn't that one of the main reasons why people tune in?
