About the Roloff Family

The family lives together on a farm in Oregon. The show depicts the challenges faced by Matt and Amy as little people as well as just normal family life. Little People Big World premiered in October 2006 and is a successful show.

Matt and Amy are the center of attention for most episodes of the show, but the entire family is as follows:

  • Matt – Matt has kind of dwarfism called diastrophic dysplasia, which caused him a great deal of pain as a child. The majority of his childhood was spent in the hospital, and that has shaped the way he approaches live as an adult. He is very focused on making sure his children have a fun childhood. He is a successful software developer and also runs his own company - Direct Access Solutions - which sells accessibility kits for little people to hotels and restaurants. While he builds his business he still works in the software industry. He is also very active in little people advocacy groups.
  • Amy – Amy’s dwarfism is caused by achrondroplasia, and she has never had the health complications that her husband experienced. She stays at home with the children and she also actively supports little people causes.
  • Jeremy and Zach - Jeremy and Zach are twins, but they are very different. Jeremy is average height and Zach is a little person. Zach’s dwarfism is caused by the same condition as his mother’s, but he has had many more complications that she has faced. He has twice had emergency surgery and has a shunt to drain fluid from the brain.

Zach is an avid soccer player and coaches a younger kids’ soccer team. He has had corrective surgery on his legs that has sidelined his playing.

  • Molly Jo – Molly Jo is the family’s only daughter. She is a star student and of average height.
  • Jacob – Jacob is the youngest member of the family and of average height. Like his brother Zach, he is an avid soccer fan.

Various extended family members and friends also make periodic appearances on the reality show.

Little People Big World Themes

One of the biggest themes of Little People Big World is the challenges faced by Matt and Amy in their daily lives as little people and how they cope with them. They often use the opportunity of having the show to present to other little people how it is possible to do everything anyone else can; you just have to learn how to do it.

Still, the family occasionally encounters discrimination. One major story line in the fourth seasons of the show was Matt’s arrest for DUI. He successful argued in court that he had been swerving because he was driving his wife’s car - which is designer for her, not him - and that the officer refused to administer field tests to him that were approved for little people.

The family farm is another important part of the show. The farm was Matt’s childhood dream, and he designed it so it is a gigantic playground for his children and himself. The family sells pumpkins on the farm and there is also a castle, a playground and hayrides.

The success of Little People Big World has meant that the family farm has been inundated with visitors. Although the farm was formerly open to anyone, they have been forced to install security gates to keep fans of the show away from the family living areas.

I truly enjoy the show. I watch it everyday. Matt and Amy are such and inspiration. They touch my heart every time i watch the show. They are indeed very special people not because they are small but because they both have a big heart. I love the fact that they try new and challenging things all the time. Most are things that average size people wouldnt attempt. I would love to meet them and there children. I have been to Portland Oregon and Washington State and had no clue they lived that close . I stayed in Vancouver Wa and visted Portland often on my visit. ON one of the shows Matt and Amy visited Nashville tn and i live 30 min away in Murfreesboro tn. Had i known i would have gone to hear them speak. I wish Matt and Amy all the best and may God continue to Bless them and hope that Matt's continues to stay in good health. Kimberly Drake
