About Ice Road Truckers
Ice Road Truckers is a reality TV show on the History Channel. The show follows a group of truck drivers who work on the ice-covered roads of the Northwest Territories in Canada. This is a very dangerous job, and accidents are frequent. Ice Road Truckers began as a single episode in a series of profiles of dangerous occupations called Suicide Missions.
The regular series began in 2006, and documents two months in the lives of the men and women who drive these heavy freight trucks. The roads themselves are not roads at all, but frozen lakes and rivers with narrow paths, which are the most direct routes to the truckers' destinations. These drivers must get their loads of supplies to the diamond mines, 350 miles away, before the ice begins to melt.
The goal for the truckers is to haul 10,000 loads in 60 days. This means that they have to work fast, and therefore necessities such as sleep and food become luxuries. The show attracts a large number of viewers due to the hazardous conditions the drivers face, as well as the personalities of the drivers themselves.
About Lisa Kelly Ice Road Truckers
During season three in May, 2009, with the addition of a young, attractive trucker named Lisa Kelly, Ice Road Truckers gained even more viewers. Kelly is in her second year of the job and is still learning along the way. She is pushed by the desire to earn the respect of the older truckers, and her drive and enthusiasm for the job are clearly evident.
Profile
Lisa Kelly is 28 years old. She was born in Michigan, but currently resides in Wasilla, Alaska. She drives the Ice Road Truckers route for two months every winter, and in the summer she drives routes based near Wasilla.
Looking at Lisa Kelly, you wouldn't immediately place her on a show like Ice Road Truckers. You might think she would be better suited for America's Next Top Model. She's a tough lady, however, and has worked hard to prove herself.
Kelly is an avid motocross driver as well as driving rigs, and she has experienced her fair share of spills and crashes. She describes herself as a tomboy, and gets a lot of attention for not fitting into the mold of what people think a truck driver should look like.
Lisa Kelly briefly dated fellow Ice Road Truckers cast member Cody Hyce, but she is now happily married. Her husband works as a truck loader.
Dangers on the Road
Driving a heavy freight truck with a big load, on a road made of ice, is dangerous. There are all kinds of things that happen on Ice Road Truckers to delay the deliveries, cause problems for the drivers like Lisa Kelly, and put everyone in extreme danger. Some of the things that have happened so far on the show include:
- Frequent storms. Truckers must decide whether to stop and wait the storms out, or continue and take their chances. Often, these storms include whiteouts, making visibility near zero.
- Slipping and sliding. Trying to scale a large, steep hill on ice is a perilous task, and often the trucks tip over.
- Cargo spills. If a truck tips, sometimes its cargo spills out in the ice and snow. It's an inconvenience with regular loads, but a near disaster when a cargo spill threatens the environment.
- Breakdowns. Often, due to the severe weather conditions, the trucks themselves or the cars that accompany them on their deliveries, break down. The truckers are equipped to repair some of these problems themselves, but often they have to wait for reinforcements to arrive. When you're on a deadline, this can be an agonizing wait.
