Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List
From LoveToKnow Reality-TV
Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List is a show that features comic and actress Kathy Griffin.
About Kathy Griffin
Kathy Griffin was born in Oak Park, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago. She got her start in comedy by joining improvisation troupe "The Groundlings". This Los Angeles-based comedy group has many famous actors and comics among it's alumni including:
- Will Ferrell
- Lisa Kudrow
- Jon Lovitz
- Julia Sweeney
- Phil Hartman
- Cheryl Hines
- Chris Kattan
The Groundlings was a perfect place for Kathy Griffin to hone her often caustic - but funny - routines that she is now so well known for.
Kathy Griffin's Career Beginnings
Kathy Griffin had guest roles on many popular sitcom's and movies over the years before landing a regular gig:
- Seinfeld – Kathy played the role of Sally Weaver (which Griffin herself created). The character was an aspiring actor who developed a one woman comedy show entitled "Jerry Seinfeld is the Devil."
- Pulp Fiction – Griffin had a very small part in this Quentin Tarantino hit.
- It's Pat – Kathy had a small part in this film based on the androgynous Saturday Night Live character Pat, played by Julia Sweeney.
It was in 1996 when Kathy was cast in the Brooke Shields comedy Suddenly Susan in which she started to attract much more attention for her comedic skills. Sadly, during the third season of the show, co-star David Strickland committed suicide and the following year the show was canceled. Griffin has stated that the other cast members "hearts weren't into it" after Stickland's death.
Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List Begins
The show debuted in 2005 on Bravo. The show chronicles Kathy's everyday life from potty training her puppy to guest hosting on The View. The show is broadcast in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. It also chronicled her life as a newlywed as she had just married Matthew Moline, a former Apple Computer exec.
Moline and Griffin Divorce
During the first season Kathy and her husband filed for divorce, but shortly before taping began for the second season of the hit show the two reconciled. The reconciliation was short lived and the couple officially divorced in 2006. In a later interview with Larry King, Kathy alleged that Moline had stolen $72,000 from her bank account over the course of one year and although they tried to get past the trust issues she developed because of this, they could not. Moline responded to the allegations saying they simply weren't true and that he was "hurt and saddened" by his ex-wife's accusations.
The divorce was worked into the first episode of season three entitled Suddenly Single.
Emmy Awards
In 2008, two of Griffin's shows were nominated for Emmy Awards, My Life on the D List for "Best Reality Program" and Kathy Griffin: Straight to Hell for "Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special." My Life on the D List won the Emmy while Straight to Hell lost out. The 2008 Emmy was Griffin's second award for My Life on the D List.
Kathy Griffin keeps a busy schedule of touring, filming her show while making guest appearances on other shows and doing the talk show circuit. With her two Emmys you would think that her climb to the top of the Hollywood ladder would be over, but at the same time, it was that climb and being on the self-imposed Hollywood "D" list that garner the comedian so much success. It's pretty safe to say that Kathy Griffin will remain comfortably on the "D" list…at least for another season.
If you want to check out the show, it airs on Tuesdays at 10 P.M. Eastern on Bravo.
