Kate Gosselin's stomach surgery proves that there are many perks that come with reality TV stardom.

Kate Gosselin's stomach surgery is world famous.

About Kate Gosselin

Kate Gosselin was born Katie Irene Kreide on March 28, 1975. After high school the unassuming Pennsylvania native became a registered nurse and in 1999 she wed Jon Gosselin. With the help of fertility treatments the couple welcomed twin girls Cara Nicole and Madelyn Kate "Mady" on October 8, 2000. Less than four years later the couple underwent additional fertility treatments and conceived sextuplets: Alexis Faith, Hannah Joy, Aaden Jonathan, Collin Thomas, Leah Hope and Joel Kevin.

The Road to Reality TV Fame

It wasn’t long before the atypical family became media stars. The Gosselins got their first taste of fame when they were featured on the NBC reality TV show Home Delivery. The episode documented the transformation of their tiny Wyomissing, Pennsylvania home to accommodate their large brood.

Not long after NBC exited, Discovery Health entered the picture. In 2005 the Gosselins were featured in a special on Discovery Health entitled Surviving Sextuplets and Twins. A year later the family was featured in another special entitled Surviving Sextuplets and Twins: One Year Later. Both reality specials garnered tremendous ratings, which prompted Discovery Health to offer the couple their own reality TV series chronicling the trials and tribulations associated with raising twins and sextuplets. Jon & Kate Plus 8 began airing in April 2007. The show's first two seasons aired on Discovery Health channel and then moved to TLC.

Kate Gosselin Stomach Surgery: The Details

The first season of Jon and Kate Plus 8 attracted millions of viewers, including Lauren Glassman, who was intrigued by Kate’s constant chatter about her post-birth stomach. Lauren Glassman is married to Dr. Lawrence Glassman, a noted plastic surgeon. When the Gosselin sextuplets were two years old Dr. Glassman contacted Kate at the insistence of his wife and offered the beleaguered mother of eight a free tummy tuck.

The offer to undergo free plastic surgery was too good for Kate Gosselin to turn down. The burgeoning reality TV star called the surgery a "wonderful gift to mothers" and happily agreed to have Dr. Glassman perform the procedure.

About Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is the cosmetic surgical procedure which Kate Gosselin underwent in order to remove the excess skin and fat from her abdomen that accumulated during her pregnancies. Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a "tummy tuck," also helps get rid of stretch marks and tightens the underlying muscles of a patient’s body so that he or she is left with as smooth and flat a tummy as possible. Like liposuction, abdominoplasty is not intended to achieve weight loss, but instead helps improve body contouring.

Kate was considered a good candidate for abdominoplasty because she is a non-smoker who was in good health and at a stable weight. In addition, abdominoplasty patients need time to heal following the surgery. For about a week, post-surgery patients will not be able to stand completely upright or move about freely. In Kate’s case, her husband and extended family helped out with the kids while she recovered from her surgery.

Kate Gosselin Stomach Surgery: The Aftermath

Kate Gosselin's stomach surgery was deemed a success and in May 2009 the reality TV mom flaunted her tight abs during a highly publicized vacation to Bald Head Island, North Carolina. The beach trip marked the first appearance of the TLC star since announcing that her marriage was on the rocks. Kate’s bikini bod made headlines and her now infamous tummy tuck was the subject of several magazine cover stories during her early summer beach jaunt will all eight of her kids minus her hubby Jon.

The Smackdown

The results of Kate's stomach surgery garnered so much attention during the last week of May 2009 that it prompted Radaronline.com to ask soon-to-be reality TV mom Nadya Suleman, who gave birth to eight babies in January 2009, what she thought of Kate Gosselin's tummy tuck.

In an interview that made waves across the country Suleman dubbed Gosselin a "cheater" for relying on plastic surgery to get her body back in bikini shape. Suleman went on to say that she would never ever get a tummy tuck and that her friends call her "rubber band" for her natural ability to bounce back after childbirth. In addition, the woman known as "Octomom" noted that Kate was "desperate for attention" and further insulted Gosselin’s body by calling it "straight" and "boxy."

The Irony

Suleman's remarks may have been outrageously inappropriate, but they do not compare to the blow thrown by Kate’s estranged husband Jon. In July 2009, Jon Gosselin confirmed his romantic involvement with 22-year-old Hailey Glassman, the daughter of the doctor who performed Kate Gosselin's tummy tuck..

I think Kate is very lucky to have had the surgery. Having kids leaves you scared, I know form experience, I have 5 of my own and even though after having my first three kids I bounced back to my original 114 pounds, but after my fourth pregnancy (TWINS) I can't stand being naked, and even avoid to make love without clothing and or with the lights on. I truely believe she did good on getting her body, believe me, I can't even take a shower without crying everytime I take my clothing off.
