Interview with Joe Willand from The Pick Up
Artist

From LoveToKnow Reality-TV

Joe Willand was a contestant during the first season of The Pick Up Artist. Fans of this VH1 show tune in to watch Master Pick Up Artist Erik von Markovik – also known as "Mystery" – teach men about the art of approaching women with confidence in social situations.

During the eight week program, the contestants learned techniques from Mystery and his associates that enabled the contestants to be more confident when approaching attractive women. It was a potentially daunting process for the contestants, who all admittedly had problems with approaching women without getting too nervous.

Joe Willand reveals to LoveToKnow readers what it was really like to be on a reality show, and what it was really like to learn techniques from such a respected professional who is considered an expert in his field.

Are you glad you went on the show?

Yes, definitely. It provided me with great new friendships and a new set of social skills that are highly coveted by many men. I am now intimidated by few, if any, social situations.

Was the time spent on the show as grueling as Mystery said it would be?

It was more intense than people would believe. We would have a lesson with Mystery and then be expected to use what we had just learned mere hours later. This would not be as intimidating if it weren't for the fact that our every movement was going to be taped! We looked forward to the days when there were no challenges and we could just relax and enjoy getting to know one another and forget about the stupid things we had attempted to do, with a camera crew capturing every detail.

Are you still single?

I have an incredible girlfriend and I am thankful every day for how blessed I am to be with her. We have so much in common and we really enjoy our time together.

What did you learn about picking up women?

I learned, more important than picking up women, how to show myself in the most flattering light and, from that vantage point, be selective in the quality of woman I spend my time with. Consequently I have the most wonderful girlfriend in the world, in part because I was able to show her the best parts of myself from the beginning.

Did Mystery socialize with all of you outside of when the cameras were rolling?

No, not really. They didn't want him to do anything with us without it being on camera.

Do you consider yourself a Pick Up Artist now?

I consider myself socially competent, which is way more important to building a fulfilling, meaningful life.

Did appearing on the show make you more popular with women?

I suppose it gave me some notoriety. I have been recognized in public since the show, which ended a long time ago. People still look at me and go “You’re from that show!"

What advice do you want to pass on to other people who are considering applying to appear on a reality show?

This was a good experience for me, so I am supportive of people desiring to be on some kind of reality show. As far as advice goes: I’d make sure you understand that a whole bunch of people are going to be let into your personal life. So be prepared for aunts, uncles, whoever, to know your private business.

Do you have any plans to appear on another reality show?

I don't have any plans to audition for, or appear on another reality show. As an aspiring actor - which was completely unrelated to my deficiencies with women- I would like to be on some kind of television show but, this time, as a character.
