I Love New York Reality Show
From LoveToKnow Reality-TV
I Love New York reality show proves to viewers that if don’t succeed at finding true love the first time round, VH1 will keep giving you airtime until you do.
About I Love New York Reality Show
I Love New York is a popular relationship/dating reality show which originally debuted on VH1 in January 2007. The series stars Tiffany Pollard (a.k.a. "New York") who is desperate to find her one true love. Pollard's quest to find a mate was well documented on another VH1 dating reality show, Flavor of Love. In that series the buxom charmer made it to the finals in two consecutive seasons but failed to secure Flavor Flav’s heart. After enduring two crushing rejections, VH1 gave her a show of her own, complete with 20 men to choose from.
Show Twists
I Love New York is unlike most reality TV dating shows in that it also features the mother of its star. VH1 producers felt Pollard needed help weeding out the posers and pretty boys from the group of 20 potential suitors, so they hired her mother, Sister Patterson. Pollard’s mother is no stranger to the world of reality TV. Her domineering personality was on full display during Pollard’s stints on Flavor of Love, where she faked a terminal illness to keep her daughter away from Flav. Sister Patterson is loud, obnoxious and only too willing to put the men through hell in an effort to find a mate for her daughter.
In each episode the men face off in competitions that test:
- Physical prowess
- Ability to handle children
- Earning potential
- Ability to romance
- Emotional commitment
End Result
In the end, Patrick S. Hunter (a.k.a. "Tango") won Pollard’s heart and was declared the winner of I Love New York reality show. Unfortunately, the story didn’t have a happy ending. Hunter and Pollard’s relationship quickly fizzled, which paved the way for I Love New York season two.
I Love New York Season Two
In season two of I Love New York, which premiered on VH1 on October 8, 2007, Pollard is still trying to find the man of her dreams. A fresh crop of 20 men are brought together to compete for her heart, Pollard’s outspoken mom is still involved in the process, and the potential love matches are made to compete in physical challenges to prove they have what it takes to be Tiffany’s true love.
Show Twists
Season two features some new twists. Pollard is allowed to choose five men from the Internet and her mother brings in five men called the "Mama’s Boys". Show producers chose the remainder of the contestants.
End Result
The winner of season two was George "Tailor Made" Weisgerber III. However, that reality TV hook-up didn’t last either. In September 2008, Pollard and Weisgerber broke up, and Tiffany moved on to star in "I Love New York" spin-offs.
I Love New York Spin-offs
Despite being unlucky in love, Pollard was able to capture America’s heart, so VH1 kept her around by offering her more reality TV series:
New York Goes to Hollywood
New York Goes to Hollywood premiered on August 4, 2008. The show follows "New York" as she tries to make it big as an actress in Tinseltown. Some of her most noteworthy gigs include:
- A commercial for a Japanese energy drink
- TV talk show appearances
- Magazine photo shoots
- Romeo and Juliet showcase
In the end series Pollard scores a legitimate movie role, but says if her acting career doesn’t pan out, she will continue doing reality TV.
New York Goes to Work
New York Goes to Work debuted on VH1 on May 4, 2009, and follows Pollard as she tries to land a "regular" job to pay her expenses while she’s between acting gigs. The series allows viewers to text message the jobs Pollard must take, such as:
- Fishing boat first mate
- Sewer worker
- Fast food employee
- Substitute teacher
- Mortuary beautician
- Ranch hand
- Oil drill worker
- Circus handler
If Pollard can get the job done, she receives a $10,000 bonus. If she quits, fails, or gets fired, she receives nothing.
Other I Love New York Spin-offs
I Love New York also gave way to a couple of spin-offs, which didn’t feature Pollard as the show’s star:
- I Love Money: This show premiered on July 6, 2008, and reunited contestants from Flavor of Love, Rock of Love, and I Love New York. The former reality TV stars are brought together in a mansion in Mexico to compete in a co-ed battle of physical challenges. The winner receives a cash prize.
- Real Chance of Love: The series debuted on VH1 on October 20, 2008, and gave ousted I Love New York contestants brothers Ahmad ("Real") and Kamal ("Chance") Givens a second chance at love. The horse-breeding, music-loving brothers put 17 women through rigorous physical challenges, and in the end Ahmad selected "Corn Fed" as his true love and Kamal selected no one.
