How to Get on MTV Reality Shows
From LoveToKnow Reality-TV
Are you wondering how to get on MTV reality shows? Getting cast as a reality TV cast member may seem out of reach, but there are more opportunities than you think. If you have designs on becoming the next star of MTV reality, this advice will help you get in front of the camera.
How to Get on MTV Reality Shows – The Basics
The casting requirements for MTV reality shows vary, depending on the type of show, but there are a few general rules that apply to all of the shows:
- You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a show, except in special cases (i.e., shows that profile high school students). Parental permission is required for anyone under 18 – no exceptions. A parent must attend the auditions with you.
- Many shows have a cut off age of 24.
- You must be available for the entirety of the show’s production, regardless of work or school commitments.
- You will have to submit to a background check, physical exam and psychological profile.
How to Get on MTV Reality Shows – The Audition Process
Casting for MTV reality shows almost always begin with open casting calls. MTV advertises their casting calls in entertainment magazines and websites, but the best way to stay up to date on all of the castings is to check the MTV Casting Calls website. MTV uses this site to announce casting for everything from one-off specials to new seasons of their trademark shows, like The Real World.
One great way to dip your toes into the MTV reality casting process is to apply to be a studio audience member or “fan.” If you are chosen for one of these positions, you may watch a taping at MTV studios, be an audience member for a reunion special for another MTV show or just act as an extra for a variety of shows. Although landing one of these spots on a show won’t guarantee you any special access to other castings, you will get a feel for how casting goes, what filming is like and what MTV is looking for.
The best way to figure out which shows on MTV might be a fit for you is to read the information on the casting call page describing the show. Sometimes, you will understand exactly what the casting directors are looking for, especially if the show in question is a new season of one of MTV’s existing reality shows. In the case of brand new shows, the casting information may be very vague. There are two reasons for this. One, MTV doesn’t want to show their cards and let word out about what they are working on, and two, not giving too much detail means a wider cross section of people are likely to turn up for the auditions – which makes creating a diverse cast much easier.
Although there is no standard audition, at all casting calls, you can expect to face a series of hurdles before ending up on the final cast. Be prepared to not make it past the door in some cases – that just goes with the territory. If you do, you may be asked to fill out a series of applications and meet with producers. A screen test may also be involved. Unfortunately, you won’t know how the audition you are going on will be run until you get there, so your best bet is to be prepared for anything.
MTV Reality Show Casting: Tips for Getting on the Show
Producers are swamped with hopefuls at every casting call, so realistically, expect an uphill battle. There are some things you can do to make yourself stand out, however. Keep the following tips in mind:
- Many MTV castings are held in New York and Los Angeles. If you are very serious about making your MTV dream come true, setting up shop near these cities will give you more opportunities.
- Don’t try to create a persona you think that the producers want to see. Even if you have watched past seasons of a show, don’t assume that the producers want to see the same cast dynamics this time. Being yourself is your best choice.
- Even if you think you would be a perfect fit for one particular show, don’t hesitate to branch out and attend a few different castings. Not only may you unexpectedly click with a certain show or production team, but being cast on one MTV show may lead to being cast on others, including your top choice.
