From LoveToKnow Reality-TV

Just how many kids does the Duggar family have? It’s a question that millions of reality TV viewers from coast to coast have asked, and amazingly the answer keeps changing.

How Many Kids Does the Duggar Family Have?

The conservative Baptist family from Tontitown, Arkansas joined the ranks of reality TV stardom thanks to their ever-expanding brood. Parents Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar were married on July 24, 1984. After waiting three years to conceive, Michelle got pregnant but miscarried the baby. Following the miscarriage the Duggars swore off birth control, and instead adopted the philosophy that children are a gift from God. Shortly thereafter Michelle conceived the couple’s first son Joshua, and in subsequent years has added an astonishing 17 additional kids to the tight-knit Duggar clan.

As of September 2009 Michelle Duggar has birthed 18 children whose names all begin with the letter "J," including two sets of twins. They are:

The Duggar's Big Surprise

On September 1, 2009, Michelle Duggar announced on NBC’s Today show that she is pregnant with the couple's 19th child, due to arrive on March 18, 2010. Michelle Duggar will be 43 years old when she gives birth for the 19th time.

TLC also showed the Duggars sharing the news of Michelle’s pregnancy with their children on an episode of 18 Kids and Counting, which aired on September 15, 2009. The episode was shot in July but didn’t air until after the Duggars made their baby announcement live on America’s top-rated morning show.

The Duggars as Reality TV Stars

The Duggars are no strangers to reality TV. They appeared in several TLC and Discovery Health one hour specials prior to landing their series. 18 Kids and Counting was formerly titled 17 Kids and Counting. TLC producers officially changed the series' name on February 24, 2009, shortly after Jordyn-Grace was born. As of September 2009, TLC has not announced an additional name change, but insiders say look for 19 Kids and Counting to debut sometime in the summer of 2010.

By then Jim Bob and Michelle will not only be parents of 19 children, they will also be first-time grandparents. On September 26, 2008, the couple’s eldest son, Joshua, married Anna Keller. In early April 2009, the couple announced that Anna was pregnant and due on October 18, 2009. It was later revealed that the pair is expecting a baby girl, who they plan to name Mackynzie Renée Duggar.

Fun Facts on How Many Kids Does the Duggar Family Have

Answering the question: "How many kids does the Duggar family have?" can be challenging. The fertile couple admitted that they thought they were done having kids after the birth of Jordyn-Grace, but apparently they were wrong.

With the Duggar clan still multiplying it bears noting some interesting facts about the family’s history:

  • Joshua’s daughter will be five months older than her future aunt or uncle, the Duggar’s 19th child.
  • As of September 2009, Michelle has been pregnant 147 months of her life, with five more to go. That’s 12-plus years carrying a child in utero.
  • The Duggars estimate that they have changed more than 90,000 diapers since eldest son Joshua was born.
  • With nearly 20 people in the home, the Duggars do approximately 200 loads of laundry a month.

  • According to a professional statistician, if each of the Duggar children has the same amount of kids as their parents, there will be 400 members of the clan in the second generation (not counting the husbands and wives that marry into the family). In addition, if the second generation procreates at the same rate, the third generation will have 8,000 members, the fourth will have 160,000, and the fifth will have 3.2 million. That’s more than five times the population of Vermont.
