Ghost Hunters TV Show

From LoveToKnow Reality-TV

The Ghost Hunters TV show is a reality program that airs on the SyFy Channel. The show follows two men as they are called to various locations to see if these places are indeed haunted by ghosts.

Ghost Hunters TV Show Basics

The ghost hunters themselves are Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson. The pair started off working together as plumbers for the Roto-Rooter company, and ended up doing their ghost hunting at night. When the Ghost Hunters TV show became a success, they switched their focus to searching for paranormal activity, while remaining on staff at Roto-Rooter. Currently, they don't have much time for plumbing, but do return to this job when time permits.

In Ghost Hunters, Hawes and Wilson are called to various locations where residents or staff believe ghosts are present. Using a series of tests with special equipment and tools, the duo searches for any paranormal presence on the properties and then delivers their findings to the person who requested the visit.

Since their popularity has increased, Wilson and Hawes have brought in other team members and called their team TAPS, which stands for The Atlantic Paranormal Society.

The Ghost Hunters Tools

There is some controversy surrounding the show, mostly focused on the accuracy of the tests and tools used by the ghost hunters. None of these tools are all that unusual, and include many commonly used gadgets. Here are some of the pieces of equipment the ghost hunters use to detect ghosts:

  • Laptop computer
  • Infrared camera
  • Digital thermometers
  • Night vision goggles and cameras
  • Audio and video recorders
  • Scanners to detect electromagnetic field activity
  • Geiger counter

Other items, such as a white noise generator, are used to try and isolate specific sounds. All of this equipment works in tandem with the computer programs they use to collect, sort, and analyze data.

Evaluating a Property

Whether the allegedly haunted property is a private residence, a jail, a church, or even an old alleyway, the ghost hunters approach the scene the same way.

The first step is to evaluate the location by daylight, taking a tour led by the property owner or caretaker. All of the unusual activity is reported and documented at this time.

Then, the Ghost Hunters crew sets up their equipment, focusing on the hot spots reported earlier. This can take several hours, as readings must be taken and recorded, equipment tested, and the entire setup evaluated for accuracy.

As night falls, the testing really begins. The TAPS members set out to discover the odd sounds, temperature changes, shadowy figures, and other oddities that have been reported by the owner. Much of this time is spent waiting, or trying to coax a reaction from any spirit that might be on the premises.

Once all of the testing has been completed, the team takes a few days to analyze the data they have collected and search for realistic explanations for what might have caused any activity they've picked up on.

Finally, Hawes and Wilson return to the property and speak with the owner, explaining what their findings were and what explanations they can offer.

Are They Really Haunted?

Most of the time, the TAPS team can come up with logical, earthly reasons for the reported paranormal activity. Sometimes, however, the only explanation they can think of is a haunting.

Ghost Hunters has come under scrutiny from a variety of sources, criticized for a lack of scientific reasoning and examination of the evidence. There have even been claims that the evidence has been false, or that the show is rigged. The producers, as well as the investigators themselves, all maintain that everything viewers see on television is real.

The Investigators and Narrator

The series is narrated by Dirty Jobs star Mike Rowe. In addition to Wilson and Hawes, the other members of the TAPS team are:

  • Steve Gonsalves
  • Dave Tango
  • Kris Williams
  • Amy Bruni
  • Heather Drolet
  • Mike Dion
  • Kristyn Gartland
  • Jen Rossi

Some episodes have featured guest investigators from similar organizations around the country, and even from Europe. There have also been celebrity guests on the show, including singer Meatloaf.
