Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed

Gene Simmons TV Show Overview

Gene Simmons is best known for his work in the rock band KISS, where he plays bass guitar and provides vocals. Family Jewels shows a different side of Simmons, portraying him more as a family man than an aging rocker.

Simmons has lived with his girlfriend, actress Shannon Tweed, since 1985 and they have two children together. Nicolas was born in 1989, and Sophie came along in 1992. Also featured in the show is Shannon's sister, Tracy Tweed.

Gene Simmons Family Jewels debuted in 2006 on the A&E network, and has aired for three seasons so far.

Season One Highlights

The first season of the Gene Simmons TV show consists of 13 episodes, which aired from August 7th to October 30th, 2006. Some of the most memorable moments from the first season are:

  • Son Nick starts his own rock band while Gene takes over as manager.
  • Nick gets his driver's license, something that this dad didn't achieve until he was 35 years old.
  • Sophie takes self-defense classes when her parents realize she is approaching the dating age.
  • Sophie joins Gene for the filming of a sexy exercise video during Career Day at school, which infuriates Shannon.
  • Gene proves that he's just like many other men by forgetting his and Shannon's anniversary.

The final episode was a cliffhanger, which hinted at the possibility that Shannon might be pregnant again. Throughout the season, she had commented several times how she wanted another baby, and asked him in the season finale about producing a television show aimed at new moms.

Season Two Highlights

After seeing solid ratings for the first season, the show was renewed. Season two ran for 21 episodes which aired from March 25th to August 19th, 2007. The premiere confirmed what the first season finale had hinted at: Shannon believed she was pregnant, and sent her sister and her son out to pick up a pregnancy test. The test turned out to be negative, however.

Other highlights from season two include:

  • Gene and Shannon both get face lifts, and the show followed them during their recovery process. These segments were very graphic, and Shannon even had some complications, including trouble dealing with the pain.
  • On a trip to Aspen, Gene has to be rescued by the ski patrol.
  • Sophie is studying the armed forces in school, so Gene takes her to Camp Pendleton for some first-hand experience. Both end up having to do some basic training, which isn't easy for them.
  • Gene takes Nick on a trip to London for his 18th birthday.
  • Shannon makes a $100,000 bet on a horse in the Kentucky Derby, causing Gene to panic. The bet ends up making headline news.

The season finishes off with a family trip to Las Vegas for Shannon's sister's wedding.

Season Three Highlights

Season three of Gene Simmons Family Jewels lasted for 26 episodes and aired from March 11th to August 8th, 2008. In the season opener, Gene is stressed out over a number of things; including that fellow KISS member Paul Stanley has fallen ill right before an important concert.

Highlights from season three include:

  • Gene takes a lie detector test on the Adam Corolla show, to prove once and for all whether or not his claims of sexual prowess are true.
  • Gene has a run-in with some unusual fans when his car breaks down in the desert. After making several frantic phone calls, he's picked up by comedian Carrot Top.
  • Shannon and the kids hunt down and buy some valuable KISS memorabilia to replace items that were lost in a flood.
  • After Shannon and Tracy are overcharged at a salon, Gene buys the establishment, gives it to Shannon and Tracy, and shows up to announce that everyone there is fired.
  • Gene is approached by Donald Trump to appear in the Celebrity Apprentice, an opportunity that he accepts.
  • Shannon and Tracy undergo extensive plastic surgery.
  • Gene is the subject of a comedy roast.

Gene Simmons as an Ordinary Dad

The charm of Gene Simmons Family Jewels is in seeing the rock and roll legend as a regular family man, devoted to his partner and his children. Even though their parents are far from average, both kids are well adjusted and grounded, and the family's dynamics are very similar to those of "normal" families.
