Extreme Home Makeover Application
From LoveToKnow Reality-TV
The Extreme Home Makeover application is available through the ABC website.
Completing the Extreme Home Makeover Application
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition differs from the original because it focuses on families in need rather than a glamorous revamping of a frumpy man or woman. The show debuted in the 2003-2004 American television season. Episodes focus on families in dire straits or who have been victims of natural disasters, such as the 5th season of the show which helped out families affected by Hurricane Katrina.
You can submit an application for yourself or for a neighboring family in need. Applications are available from ABC.com. When submitting an application you want to get the attention of the producers.
Tell the Story
Every family has a story. If you are submitting the extreme home makeover application for another family in need, tell why. Explain why you think they need the makeover of their home. What good works do they do? Are they hurting financially? Do they have more children than bedrooms? Why do they deserve this makeover?
Include Photos or Videos
Photos and/or videos of the family and their home will help convey the story you are telling. You can show the producers, architects and designers what they have to work with. Remember the saying: a picture is worth a thousand words.
Extreme Situations
In 2006, The Smoking Gun published an internal ABC memo that was distributed to affiliate executives detailing particular tragedies or infirmities the show’s producers were seeking. The memo stated the show’s producers were seeking families with Down syndrome, skin cancer, Lou Gehrig Disease, progeria, and ALS. The memo listed families who were
- Hate-crime victims
- Lost a child to a drunk driver
- Families who have had their home vandalized
While many news outlets were highly critical of the published memo, ABC and the show’s producers defended their position. Tom Forman, executive producer, told USA Today the memo helps their affiliates identify families who really need a break and help. Some families may not even be aware there is a show that would be able to provide them with this kind of assistance.
Surprise a Friend
If you are planning to surprise a friend or neighbor with an extreme home makeover, be prepared with a plan to relocate them for seven days. The producers may only give you a moment’s notice to vacate the premises while they do the makeover process. Family pets will also need other arrangements while the crew is working on the home.
You should also take into account the feelings of your friends or neighbors that you apply for. Some people are very proud or very private. They may not appreciate you publicizing their need, no matter how well intentioned. Be aware of their feelings before submitting the application.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
The reality show airs on Sunday nights on the ABC network. Current episodes are available for viewing on their website. Host Ty Pennington and his team help out families in need including hurricane damage, financially and medically challenged families and military families.
In 2008, the show featured the King family. The family runs a daycare that services their entire community. They devote all of their time and energy to it. When their home became infected by a hazardous mold, they did not have the financial resources necessary to take care of it. Thanks to Ty Pennington and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, they don’t have to.
