Gameshow
Game shows and competitions are massively appealing formats for television shows around the globe. Reality television adds a new dimension to this genre, allowing viewers to look beyond the single aspect of the competition and get a peek at the dynamics and emotions involved with the players. Viewers don't merely watch the game, but they get to see what happens behind the game and enables them to make predictions and choose sides based on more than the game itself.

The Big Prize

Reality shows that focus on a game or a competition almost always involve a grand prize for the winner. Some shows feature the contestants once while other shows have the same contestants for the entire season. Here are some examples of prizes offered by competition reality shows on television:

  • Survivor features a top prize of $1,000,000.
  • America's Next Top Model features a prize for the winner that includes a modeling contract, a magazine spread, and representation by a famous modeling agency.
  • Project Runway winners enjoy a cash prize to assist them in creating their own clothing line.

For some contestants, they do not care so much about the cash prizes as they do the title of winner and the prestige it can bring. Winners of shows showcasing certain talents – such as Project Runway or Make Me a Supermodel – can get their foot in the door in difficult industries.

The Intrigue of the Game

Many of the competition/game show reality shows on television go in depth with allowing viewers to see how the players deal with the stress of the game. For example, shows like MTV's Real World/Road Rules Challenge has players who get involved in order to earn a cash prize, but much more time is spent focusing on the interpersonal dynamics of the players than the actual game.
