Candy Girls
Candy Girls is an E! Network reality show following four "video vixens" and their agent as they navigate the world of music videos. The show premiered in March, 2009, and ran for eight episodes.
Meet the Candy Girls
The cast of Candy Girls is made up of the video girls themselves along with their agent, make-up artist and agent's assistant. The featured personalities are:
Danielle Crawley
Crawley runs an agency called Bella, which places models in hip hop music videos, promotional shoots and special events. She acts as both their agent and their manager. She has a network of approximately 13 girls but only four of her most popular clients appear on the show. She has strict rules for her clients; if they date any of the musicians for whom they work, she fires them immediately.
April
April is a make-up artist with over 13 years of experience in the industry. She has done the make-up for music videos for artists such as a Snoop, Bow Wow and Eminem. April has a ten year old son with Tyson Beckford, model and fellow E! reality star (Beckford appears on the network's Make Me a Supermodel.) He makes an appearance on the show when he visits his son. April's attempts to juggle motherhood with her work is a major theme on the show.
Kysha
Kysha is Danielle's best friend. She wants to work in the industry, so Danielle brings her on as an assistant. Kysha makes a few mistakes early on because she doesn't understand the business. She gets a new boyfriend and eventually becomes so absorbed in her relationship that her work suffers. Danielle fires her and Kysha decides she wants to try getting into the modeling side of the industry.
Brooke
Brooke is arguably the most popular "candy girl" in the series. She has the longest resume of music video credits and the musicians she works with are always after her for a date. She considers herself a diva and she never fails to deliver on that sort of behavior. Although she is Danielle's client, she is not afraid to book side deals without Danielle's knowledge which always leads to conflict. She also hints at her goal of finding a man who can support her financially.
Terricka
Terricka Cason rivals Brooke Bailey in terms of resume and attitude. Like Bailey, she frequently books side jobs outside of her work with Daniella which often leads to conflict. She and Daniella almost came to blows in one argument.
During the show, Cason booked a side deal for an NBA performance and earned a reputation for being a basketball groupie. The single mother hopes to turn her video career into an acting one in the future.
Olivia
Olivia Jones is the certified "good girl" of the group. On the show, there is a great deal of conflict between Jones and the other girls because Jones opts not to party very often, has a serious relationship with her boyfriend and is a graduate student working towards her MBA. Jones comes from a privileged background, which is a source of contention as well. She is also the youngest girl on the show.
Blanca
Blanca is Danielle's newest girl, and much of the series focuses around her trying to find her feet in the industry. She catches on relatively quickly but has a fiery temper that raises its head at all the wrong moments. She had a physical altercation with her boss. She claims to have a second personality - Phoenix - who is responsible for her bad behavior.
Candy Girl Show Themes
According to post show interviews, all of the women involved in Candy Girls hoped to change people's impressions of women in hip hop videos. A so-called "video vixen" is more likely to be referred to in negative terms in pop culture, and the exploits of the most famous video girl, Karrine Steffans, have not helped. Steffans wrote a famous book called Confessions of a Video Vixen, which portrayed her life as a video girl as little more than that of a paid groupie. Candy Girls wanted to change this perception.
Did it work? If the message boards are to be believed, the reception was mixed at best.
A new season of Candy Girls is in the works.
