What is a Bridezilla?

The term "Bridezilla" is a combination of bride and Godzilla. From dictionary.com, the slang word Bridezilla means "a bride-to-be who focuses so much on the event that she becomes difficult and obnoxious". You will see the brides on the show rushing around, yelling at people, and trying to get their way 100% of the time. The women on the show are cocky, arrogant, and very, very selfish.

Show Format

Bridezillas starts about one or two months out from the bride's wedding and they follow them up to the wedding. Usually there are two women featured in each episode which they alternate between. At the beginning of each episode you learn about the fiancé and bride: how they met, what they do for a living, and the plans they have after the wedding. The cameras follow them through all the important appointments and special events leading up to the wedding. Some of the aired scenes are with their fiancés, but you will mostly see the future bride going to her appointments with family members or by herself. Sometimes the show lets you see some touching moments as the brides and their fiancés go on dates or have a romantic moment.

Problems with the Show

As with most reality shows, there are some problems with Bridezillas:

When the show first aired, most of the brides showcased were caucasian and rich, hailing from New York. Most of the women were actually marrying into wealth and viewers found that the women thought they deserved to marry into wealth. As the show continued into the next seasons the producers started branching out to Chicago, L.A., and other cities to find African-Americans, low-middle class couples, and even same-sex couples.

During the first season the producers didn't realize how well people would take to the show, given the history of wedding shows. So from then on the shows were edited to show the worst in the brides. The producers of Bridzillas were sued during the first season because they misled one of the brides about what they were doing and then only showed the worst moments of her leading up to the wedding.

Some of the brides were accused of acting for the cameras. One of the brides was an aspiring actress and some viewers wondered if she was just overreacting for the camera. She admitted on the show that she only has had a few acting jobs, so did the show work for her career.

Some Certain Facts You'll Realize

Here are some facts some viewers realize as they watch the show:

  • Viewers hate the women. First they are amazed that someone can act like that and treat other people like that. Some viewers stare at the screen with their mouths gaped open thinking "Did she do that?", "Is she serious?", or "What did she just say?"
  • Viewers wonder why the man is marrying her. Who would put up with this kind of behavior? Because the show is drastically edited, there are some things viewers probably miss, but is some of this behavior going to reflect how the marriage will be?
  • Why won't anyone stand up to the bride? Every so often someone actually does. In one episode a nail technician quarreled with the bride, but that's a rare occurrence. It appears that most of the people involved realize that it's the bride's day and it will be over soon and they can put up with it for a short time.
