Big Brother After Dark
From LoveToKnow Reality-TV
Big Brother After Dark isn't a new show based on the concept of Big Brother; it is simply the uncensored video feed from the Big Brother house.
What Can't Be Shown on CBS
Big Brother After Dark jumps networks from CBS and airs nightly on Showtime 2 from the hours of 12 A.M. to 3 A.M. (Eastern). The show features live, uncut footage of the houseguest's activities between the hours of 9 P.M. and midnight (Pacific). This spinoff of Big Brother has been received well by the public and, according to Showtime execs, it has done well in bringing viewers and new subscribers over to the premium cable channel.
The concept behind Big Brother After Dark was a result of producers noticing that the houseguest's were most active with all their plotting and scheming during this three hour time frame. The show first aired in 2007 during the season of Big Brother 8.
What to Expect
If you are already a Big Brother fan, and when the show finishes airing it leaves you wanting more, you now have the option of watching a three-hour, uncensored chunk of the show on Big Brother After Dark. There are really no surprises as to what you can expect by seeing the show. You'll see more profanity, more plotting, more "extracurricular" activities amongst the houseguests and maybe a little insight as to why they behave the way the do (which is sometimes a little crazy). Basically, what you're going to see is more of the same Big Brother antics only with nudity and profanity. Here are a few items that have aired in the past:
The Shower Scenes
For whatever reason (maybe the chance of a little nudity or lascivious hookup) the camera crew likes to film the houseguests taking showers. The film crews do not film the person within the shower, but instead outside the shower doors where you can get a glimpse of heads, feet and maybe a little leg. Here are some shower scene highlights:
- Girls showering together – This has been done so many times on reality TV that it isn't even considered racy anymore by some viewers. It usually translates to two grown women showering together talking about their hair, shampoo and bath products.
- Eric and Jessica shower – They dry off while still in the shower stall and emerge wrapped in towels.
- Pranks – Eric tries to prank fellow housemate Dick while he's showering, but ends up hurting himself.
The Hook Ups
Here's a short round up of the houseguests that have hooked up and those who want to hook up:
- Eric and Jessica – This was the same couple who had a scene in the shower stalls.
- Chelsia and Sheila – No hook up here, but Chelsia expresses her interest in wanting to be more than houseguests with Sheila in season nine.
- Matt and Natalie – Though Matt laments on and on about how he isn't attracted to Natalie and how he thinks she's less then intelligent, he has no problem making out and engaging in other amorous activities with her.
Mixed Reviews for Big Brother After Dark
The producers of Big Brother got droves of fans hooked on voyeurism and bring these fans what they wish they could see on CBS. Some fans of the show have shouted out that the After Dark series is a snooze fest and not worth the extra money they have to pay to subscribe to Showtime. Others, naturally, just love it. Not that there seems to be anything wrong with voyeurism on reality TV; isn't that basically what every reality show is anyway? Isn't every reality show like Big Brother simply a voyeuristic venture into these strangers lives?
Regardless of how you feel about these types of reality shows, After Dark is a ratings boon for Showtime and they've picked it up for an additional season. The show will begin airing as the new season of Big Brother gets underway. Official airdates have not yet been announced by Showtime.
