About What Not to Wear

What Not to Wear is a TLC reality television show that makes over everyday people classified as "fashion disasters" by family, friends or coworkers. Participants are secretly nominated and, if selected, given a chance to fly to New York City to receive a $5,000 wardrobe. The catch? Individuals chosen must give up their current wardrobes to the show's hosts, Clinton Kelly and Stacy London. They must also withstand the duo's critiques about style choice and fashion sense. Of course, they must agree to do all of this on national television in an episode to be broadcast at a later date.

Stacy and Clinton spend the first day with the participant, suggesting items of clothing that are flattering. The applicant is then free to shop for outfits, however, he or she must stick to the fashion rules that were taught. The show is about more than just a style upgrade. A mini-makeover for hair and make up (skin care if the applicant is a guy) is also part of the deal. At the end of the show, participants show off their new look to Stacy and Clinton. They are also viewed arriving home and surprising their family and friends with their new image.

Know the Disclaimer

As with all legal contracts, there are a few things you agree to by being a participant on the show. Participants agree to pay all local, state and federal taxes, including any income, sales or use taxes, as well as any governmental charges assessed on prizes, goods, services or cash gifts. The application disclaimer also states that by accepting the aforementioned prizes, gifts or money, you also "release and indemnify" the show's producer from any liability. By agreeing to be on What Not to Wear, you authorize the producer to "deduct or withhold" any taxes due on the prizes, gifts, services or cash. The full disclaimer can be found at the bottom of the application page.

After You Apply

Once you apply for What Not to Wear, the best thing to do is just sit back and relax. Do not send additional e-mails unless you have been contacted and asked to do so. This includes sending additional applications. If you know the person you are nominating would not be serious about being a participant, then don't waste your time filling it out. Also, if you think he or she could not take the time off work and fly to New York City or have issues with turning over his or her wardrobe, then, again, don't bother filling out the application.
