America's Next Top Model
From LoveToKnow Reality-TV
America’s Next Top Model is a reality show where aspiring models compete in challenges to survive being eliminated and to ultimately become…well, America’s Next Top Model. The show is a product of Tyra Banks, a former successful model in her own right. Currently, ANTM is in cycle 11.
Basic Format
There are usually about 10-14 contestants. Each week there are certain challenges that the models must go through, which always include a photo shoot of some sort. Based on the quality of the pictures and the attitude of the models for the current challenge, models may stay for another week or be eliminated. The girls are given one last challenge in front of the judges, which can sometimes make or break a judge’s decision. At the end of the show, if Tyra hands you a picture, you are safe. Rarely is there a double elimination or no elimination. You can usually find spoilers for the show on the Interent. The beginning of each episode lets the girls train for the current show’s theme. Then, the actual photo shoot occurs, which lets the girls utilize any training they have received earlier. During each season, the contestants receive a makeover, which happens early on, usually around the third episode. At this point, you see some of the model’s true colors and their ability to accept change. When there are three or four models left, there is a trip to a major fashion center of the world or somewhere related to a theme Tyra wants to represent. Previous trips have included Milan, Paris, Barcelona, and Tokyo.
America’s Next Top Model People
There are reappearing figures on America’s Next Top Model. Some are on each season as a judge, others help the show with fashion, makeup, and photography.
- Tyra Banks—she is the host. She arrives from time to time to give advice, offer a shoulder, and deliver the bad news of elimination or the good news of survival. She’s the one that gives “Tyra Mail” which are clues to what the girls’ next challenge may be.
- J. Alexander—or Alexander Jenkins, is a model and runway coach to the models. He is the foremost authority of runway walking in the world. He is also a judge on ANTM.
- Nigel Barker—he is a fashion photographer who takes many of the model’s pictures and is often a judge on the show.
- Jay Manuel—he isn’t a judge, but has a huge influence on the models. He has been there from day one and is usually the director of the photo shoots.
Other people who have appeared on the show include:
- Janice Dickinson—A former model who creates controversy because she is mean-spirited and highly critical. She defected from ANTM to create her own show, Janice Dickinson’s Modeling Agency.
- Twiggy—she is one of the most famous models of all time, especially in the 1960s.
- Kimora Lee Simmons—she is an American model and fashion designer. She is the head of design of Baby Phat.
- Nole Marin—fashion editor of ELLE magazine.

International Flavor
The show has inspired many other countries to find top models, like Croatia and Denmark. While they follow a similar format as ANTM, watch the American version if you want outrageous drama and, very often, models with large egos and no compassion. America's Next Top Model is sure to hit the tops of any list of reality shows..
