ABC True Beauty
From LoveToKnow Reality-TV
Using an interesting reality TV concept on ABC, True Beauty throws a twist into traditional modeling and pageant shows by judging both inner and outer beauty. Contestants are physically attractive, but if their personality traits don't match their outward appearances they find themselves eliminated. The show premiered its first episode on January 5, 2009.
The Big Names Behind the Show
This show comes from the creative minds of Ashton Kutcher and Tyra Banks. Although both celebrities have production companies of their own, True Beauty is through Banks' company, Bankable Productions. Kutcher and Banks share Executive Producer credits for the show.
Kutcher is the creative mind behind the reality series Beauty and the Geek and Punk'd, while Banks hosts and produces America's Next Top Model. Interestingly, True Beauty combines elements of all three shows, with physically beautiful contestants learning life lessons about themselves and their attitudes through the use of hidden cameras.
ABC True Beauty Format
The show invites ten contestants to live together and participate in challenges in order to determine which one is the most beautiful. The contestants are both female and male, and have been told that they are participating in a reality show to discover the most beautiful person in America. They are not told that they're also being judged on their character, or inner beauty.
Each week, there are two challenges issued. The first is for everyone and contains a challenge within a challenge. For example, the very first activity involved all of the contestants being measured and evaluated to assign them an individual "beauty score." What they don't know is that there's a hidden camera trying to catch them in the act of looking at their competitor's private medical folders.
After the first challenge the two contestants who scored the lowest are secretly given another challenge, again with a hidden camera catching their every move. They are put in a situation where they can choose to help someone, or instead ignore them and walk away. Whoever reacts most appropriately to this situation is safe from elimination.
After Elimination
In order to keep the true aim of the program a secret from the contestants, they are all told that their eliminations are based on a scientific formula that is somehow tied to their original beauty scores.
However, after a contestant is eliminated, they are told the real concept of the program. Following this revelation, they are shown a montage of video clips that highlights the eliminated contestant's actions that led to his or her elimination.
Season One Contestants
The first group of contestants includes:
- Julia Anderson, 23, a magician's assistant from Dallas, Texas
- Chelsea Bush, 21, a model and artist from Brentwood, Tennessee
- Billy Jeffrey, 31, a vitamin store owner from Lewiston, Idaho
- Laura Leigh, 21, a model from Staten Island, New York
- Ashley Michaelson, 21, a designer's assistant from Rochester, New York

The Judges
True Beauty enlists the help and wisdom of three judges, who also act as the hosts of the show. They are:
Nole Marin
Marin is a fashion editor at ELLE magazine and was an integral part of the panel on seasons three and four of America's Next Top Model. He worked as a creative director on Canada's Next Top Model, and is often seen with his beloved pet chihuahua, Empress Minnie.
Cheryl Tiegs
Tiegs is a model, most famous for gracing the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition many times in the 1970s and 80s. She has done some acting work and currently has a line of accessories with Revlon cosmetics.
Vanessa Minnillo
Minnillo was Miss Teen USA in 1998, and hosted Total Request Live on MTV from 2003-2007. She has worked as a correspondent for Entertainment Tonight and models for many magazines and advertisements.
The Prizes
Of course the contestants on True Beauty aren't just playing for the title of "Most Beautiful Person in America." The winner of the show will get $100,000 in cash as well as a spot in the coveted "100 Most Beautiful People" list in People magazine.

Watched each episode as it was broadcast. I kept them on Tivo. In the past couple days I have watched each episode again. It is interesting to watch the progress after knowing the outcome. I now do this with every reality show I watch.
